We should not count on Henry Melton

I know a lot of people have been hoping that the Cowboys will try to sign Henry Melton from Chicago in order to shore up the Dline.

Well we should stop discussing him:

ESPN Dallas reports the Cowboys will not pursue free agent DT Henry Melton.

Reporter Tim MacMahon had floated Melton as a possible target for Big D, but it was always a stretch because of the Cowboys' cap situation. The Bears are also extremely unlikely to let their burgeoning 3-technique force reach the open market.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Bears are "fully expected" to use the franchise tag on free agent DT Henry Melton if a long-term deal isn't reached before the March 4 deadline to apply the tag.

The Tribune had previously reported it was a "good bet" Melton would be tagged absent a long-term deal. According to beat writer Brad Biggs, the sides will meet Saturday at the Combine. Coming off a two-year emergence as 3-technique force, Melton figures to be asking for the moon in long-term talks, making the tag likely.

Melton fully expected to receive franchise tag absent a longterm contract before March 4 deadline for tag.

According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, defensive tackle Henry Melton expects the Bears to place the franchise tag on him if they can’t get an extension worked out before the March 4th deadline. Melton fully expected to receive franchise tag absent a longterm contract before March 4 deadline for tag.

That is no surprise that Chicago would probably use the franchise tag. However, I dont buy that the Boys would go after him if he did hit the open market.

I would love for the 'boys to sign Melton. He would make a difference. But if you don't have the salary cap room then what can you do.

Where did you get that information? From Rotoworld...

Levitre

Bills beat writer Joe Buscaglia is growing "less optimistic by the day" that the team will re-sign free agent LG Andy Levitre.
Levitre doesn't seem to be a candidate for the franchise tag, and team president Russ Brandon has said the team will only use it as a last resort. FS Jairus Byrd is the more likely candidate, anyway. Levitre, 27 in May, is intent on shopping for the best offer, and he's our No. 1 free-agent guard on the market. Feb 21 - 1:34 PM

Vasquez is most likely to resign, but not Levitre. On the other hand, Levitre will be the most sought after OG in FA.

The Chargers have identified free agent LG Louis Vasquez as their "top priority" to re-sign and will make him a contract offer "shortly."
The Chargers arrived in Indianapolis on Wednesday, and on Thursday night met with Vasquez's player rep. Vasquez is believed to be seeking $6 million annually. Turning 26 in April, Vasquez would be a hot commodity if he hit the open market. Feb 22 - 11:55 AM

I think if Vasquez is seeking $6 million a year, then Levitre will probably command $7-8 million a year. There really isn't much difference between them in terms of talent level and Vasquez is actually a year younger. Levitre is expected to cost more, but I couldn't imagine much more.

Projected contract for Andy Levitre...

5-year $37.5 million. $15.5 million signing bonus. The first two years base salaries would be guaranteed.

Base Salaries Cap Hits
2013: $1 million $4.1 million
2014: $3 million $6.1 million
2015: $5 million $8.1 million
2016: $6 million $9.1 million
2017: $7 million $10.1 million

This is not really news. Most teams try to keep their young good players if they can afford them.

Run the ball. Ejecute el balón. Courir avec le ballon. Eseguire la palla. ボールを実行します. I don’t care what language you say it in. Just make sure it happens and happens often!!!!
