Let's take a look at the likely roster, and look at where the holes will be in a year.

Quarterback - Need a new backup QB to replace Orton by 2015.  Low level draft priority for 2014

  • Romo is signed through 2019, but the Cowboys could manage releasing him in 4-5 years if they have a successor by then.
  • Orton signed through 2014
  • NEED - QB to replace Orton as Backup QB in 2015

Running Back - Only Tanner will be a Free Agent in 2014.  NOt a 2014 Priority

  • Murray signed through 2014
  • Tanner is RFA next year
  • Dunbar signed through 2015
  • Randle signed through 2016

Wide Receiver - All current receivers signed to multi-year contracts except Armstrong.  Not a priority in 2014

  • Bryant signed through 2014, but Cowboys may try to extend in during the season next year.
  • Austin signed through 2016, but could be released in 2014 or 2015 to make room for Bryant Contract
  • Williams signed through 2016
  • Harris signed through 2014.
  • Beasley signed through 2014

Tightend - All except Rosario signed to multiyear deals.  Low priority in 2014.  If Rosario is good in 2013, another 1 year deal for him is likely.

  • Witten signed through 2017
  • Hanna signed through 2015
  • Escobar signed through 2016

Offensive Tackle - 3 main rotation signed to multi-year deals.  Priority for 2014 depends heavily upon the performance of Free this season.  2014 Priority is Medium.

  • Smith signed through 2015
  • Free signed through 2014
  • Parnell signed through 2014

Offensive Guard - Arkin has been a disappointment, and other aging Free Agent players will likely be cut either this year or next year.  Priority for 2014 is HIGH.

  • Leary signed through 2014
  • Livings signed through 2016, but likely to be cut this year or in March
  • Bernadeau signed through 2015
  • Arkin signed through 2014, but likely to be cut if veteran signed.
  • Unknown Veteran Free Agent may be signed to 1-year deal

Offensive Center - 3 Centers signed to multi-year deals.  Not a 2014 priority

  • Frederick signed through 2017
  • Costa signed through 2014
  • Bernadeau signed through 2015
  • Cook - likely to be released before season starts

Place Kicker - Bailey in last year of Contract.  Priority for 2014 is HIGH.

  • Bailey will be Restricted Free Agent in 2014.  The Cowboys will likely sign him to a contract extension during the upcoming season.

Punter - Jones is in final year of contract.  Priority for 2014 is Medium.

  • Since Jones was injured last year, the Cowboys will likely allow him to finish the year healthy before signing him to multi-year contract extension if he plays well.

Long-snapper - Multi-year contract in place.  Not a 2014 Priority.

  • Ladouceur has been perfect for 8 years, and is signed for 5 more seasons.

Defensive End - Spencer will be a Free Agent in 2014, and the Cowboys are prohibited from Franchising him for 3 straight years.  Priority for 2014 is HIGH.

  • Ware is signed through 2017
  • Wilbur is signed through 2015
  • Crawford is signed through 2015
  • Bass is signed through 2014
  • Selvie is on a 1-year deal.

Defensive Tackle - If Ratliff doesn't perform well this year, this may be the highest Priority on the team.  Hatcher will be a Free Agent in 2014.  Priority for 2014 is HIGH.

  • Ratliff signed through 2017, but last 3 year salaries are prohibitive.  Ratliff will be released no later than 2015.  The Cowboys cannot afford to pay his salary in 2015-2017 unless he takes a pay cut.
  • Hatcher will be a Free Agent.  Look for the Cowboys to try to extend him during the season if he is playing well.
  • Lissemore is signed through 2016
  • Bass - see above
  • Hayden is signed to a 1-year deal.

Outside Linebacker - have many players signed to multi-year deals.  Not a 2014 priority

  • Carter signed through 2014
  • Durant signed through 2014
  • Holloman signed through 2016
  • Sims playing on 1-year deal.
  • Albright will be a Free Agent in 2014

Middle Linebacker - Sean Lee is in final year of contract .  2014 Priority is HIGH.

  • Lee will likely be signed to contract extension during the season to prevent him from becoming a Free Agent.  The Cowboys could use the Franchise Tag on him if a deal cannot be reached.
  • McSurdy is signed through 2015
  • Magee is signed through 2015

Cornerback - Of the top 5 players, only Moore will be a Free Agent in 2014.  2014 Priority is Low.

  • Carr is signed through 2017
  • Claiborne is signed through 2016
  • Scandrick is signed through 2016
  • Webb is signed through 2016
  • Moore will be a Restricted Free Agent in 2014.  Look for the Cowboys to make him a qualifying offer next March if he plays well this year.

Safety - a lot depends on the performance of inexperienced players like Church, Wilcox and Johnson.  Priority is Medium for 2014

  • Allen is signed to one-year deal, but if he starts all year, he would likely sign another 1-year deal if asked.
  • Church is signed through 2016
  • Johnson is signed through 2015
  • Wilcox is signed through 2016

**********************

Here are the High priority positions for 2014:

  • Offensive Guard - solved with 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick in 2014
  • Place-Kicker - solved with Contract Extension for Bailey
  • Defensive End - solved with 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick in 2014
  • Defensive Tackle - solved with Contract Extension for Hatcher and/or a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd round pick in 2014
  • Middle Linebacker - solved with Contract Extension for Lee

Here are the Medium Priority positions for 2014:

  • Offensive Tackle - solved with 3rd or 4th round pick in 2014.
  • Punter - Soved with Restricted Free Agent Tender in 2014
  • Safety - Solved by spending 4th or 5th round pick in 2014.

IMHO

Offensive Full Back - High Priority 2014

Nice break down, I've actually put together a drastically early draft identifying needs where I believe Dallas will draft them with hypothetically who & why. I'd love to know what u think.

1)3DT - Will Sutton (much like when Rob Ryan came here he was given his first year to evaluate & next year was given the 1st round pick to identify largest need, Ryan loves his corners so bam a corner! Well Rod & Monte love their 3 techs.... Boom! Sutton)

2)RG - David Yankee ( we need more OL help & Garrett seems to love him some smart Oliners well Yankee may be that guy IMO)

3)2QB - Aaron Murray (we may find ourselves a deal here. Even with the recent success of short QB's I still think Murray could slide & if he were 2" taller he woulda been a 1st round pick)

4)SDE - Dominique Easley (quality DE's fall every year I think Dom could be one of them)

5)1DT - Bruce Gaston (a lot of guys wanted Bruce's counterpart this year Kawann Short. We can Get Bruce in the later rounds I believe seeing as he is more of a 1 than a 3 tech & they seem to go later.

6)Slot WR. Too late in the draft to identify but these little speedsters tend to fall & I don't think we have our victor Cruz/Wes welker who ever u'd like to compare of the future on this roster yet.

7)RT -loooooong shot but since Yankee can play both the priority drops a little for me. But a long shot is better than no shot.

Well, I was making my roster cuts, and just naturally started looking at what was going to happen next year based on those roster cuts.

Great analysis Jumbo. This is a good thread: since Jerry is always in to fixing last year's problem, it's good to look forward and see what this year's problem is going to be. I agree that help on the D-line is going to be the highest priority going into 2014, as our aging front finally gets exposed and falls apart.

I also think that RB is at least a medium priority. This year is really Murray's last shot to prove that he can stay healthy as an NFL workhorse. If he can't, I would imagine we would invest a pick in a complimentary guy to keep our running game afloat. It wasn't that special with Murray last year, but after he went down it completely collapsed, and we ended up throwing fifty times a game. Besides, you know Jerry is going to get himself some new skill position toys.

I like Sutton, and I like spending the 1st round pick on a DT.  I have a feeling Ratliff is going to have another bad year, but I think the Cowboys can get by with Hayden, Bass, and Lissemore rotating in, while Hatcher will be the main disruptive force inside.  But definitely 1st round for Defensive Tackle.  The Wildcard is that if a premium passrusher falls to the Cowboys, they could move Crawford inside to play tackle when he comes back from injury next year.

Definitely 2nd round for Guard.  Next year will be more normal, and high quality Guards will likely be available in round 2.

Definitely 3rd round for strong-side run-stuffing DE, unless the scenario presents itself like above.  I strongly disagree that 2014 is the right time to pick a QB unless it is in the later rounds.  2015 is my target year for the Cowboys to pick Romo's eventual successor - hopefully with a 1st round pick so they can get the 5-year rookie contract on him.

I would like a 4th round pick spent on an offensive tackle.

So, bottom line is I think the Cowboys should go DL, OL, DL, OL with their first 4 picks in 2014.  IF Ratliff plays lights out, then I could see the Cowboys picking yet another safety with their 3rd or 4th round pick instead of two defensive linemen.

The thing about RB's is that the good ones are usually hot right out of the gate as rookies. It is the one position where rookies can do just as well or better than veterans.

If the Cowboys part ways with Murray after the 2014 season, I could see them spending 1st and 2nd round picks in 2015 on RB and QB, in either order.

LOL.  It's just when I am solving problems, like cutting the roster down to 53 guys, I always have my eye on the collateral damage it does for the future, which impacts not only the need for talent, but has Salary CAP implications as well.  I try to look at the big picture impact, not just the immediate impact.

Right now it's hard to pin point where players will go. A 1st rounder right now could end up being a 3rd rounder come April. But I believe with all the depth this year he could fall maybe. Kinda like Warford did. I agree though on Cyril & Yankee , both good OL players!

I'm not sold on Church yet.  I think Johnson has the most natural instincts for the Free safety position, but he needs to get healthy once and for all.  But watching Johnson make plays all over the field in college tells me he is a lot like Sean Lee.  He just understands the position he plays.  It's instinctual.  And I like Wilcox as the future SS.  The guy loves to hit, has soft hands for making interceptions, and I can see him as a Troy Polamalu type.

But even if Johnson gets healthy, and the Cowboys have a strong 3 man rotation with Johnson, Wilcox and Church at safety, they will still need another young guy to fill up the roster.  So I see them using another middle round pick on a safety next year also.

I agree 150% about how things can change. I'm just going strictly off of status as of right now. He'll by next year I may be screaming RB in the 1st followed by RT,DE,TE lol god I hope not though, no more TE's! Lol
